Artem Medicam inter primas apud omnes gentes in exercitio fuisse,
et ipsius rei natura probat et historia quoque omnium temporum
testatur. Hanc vero disciplinam, generi humano saluberrimam, non
nisi observationibus mere empiricis et commentis superstitiosis
ubique primis temporibus fuisse conflatam facile intelliges. Scilicet
praesente semper valetudinis recuperandae desiderio, at deficiente
medico bene informato, optima medicastris et agyrtis ministrabatur
occasio fallacias suas aegrotis quamcumque opem avide petentibus
venditandi. Quae res quantum mali hominibus intulerit, omnem superat
conjecturam. Ad hoc malum, quantum fiere posset, tollendum,
recentioribus temporibus apud omnes fere gentes partim doctrinae
medicae studium facilius redditum est eo, quod vernacula lingua opera
sua exscripserint auctores medici, partim vero civibus etiam non
medicis ad veritates hujus disciplinae maxime necessarias per populares
tractatus therapeuticos patefactus est aditus. At haec nostratibus
adhuc omnino fere desunt commoda. -- Contra vero et in praxi medica
impedimentum est permagnum apud medicos haud paucos, quamvis de cetera
et doctrinae soliditate et benevolentiae integritate insignes, penuria
linguae fennicae, qua evenit ut neque plane intelligere possint morbi
naturam fennice descripti, neque semper optimam eligere medendi
methodum. Incommoda haecce, quibus nostra adhuc, laborat patria,
perpendentes operae praetium esse existimavimus, quo et facilior in
posterum cuilibet fiat labor medicas res fennica lingua tractare,
et major beneficia artis medicae civibus nostris impertiendi potestas
medicis linguae fennicae minus peritis suppeditetur, terminos medicos
in lingua fennica occurrentes, quantum et propria assequi potuimus
diligentia et aliorum etiam collectis accepimus, sequentibus pagellis
exhibere. -- Fontes et adminicula, quibus in conficiendo opusculo

exhibitA sunt, nec non _UNderrättelse om de mest gångbara sjukdomars
kännande och motande; samt ett litet Res- och Hus-Apothek af Johan
Joh:son Haartman_, Åbo, 1765.

Est vero in consilio eos tantummodo terminos medicos heic admittere,
qui plurimum in genuino versantur Fennonum sermone et qui respectu
pathologico et therapeutico maximi sunt momenti cognitu. Quamobrem
repudiavimus omnes qui aut sueticismum nimis olent aut per, meram
versionem ex latinis denominationibus extitere fennico idiomati minus
congrui, quippe illis genium linguae vernaculae inquinare noluimus,
hos vero ex medicorutn fictione, non ex populi ore, in lucem prodiisse
arbitraverimus. Ordinem tractationis potissimum elegimus alphabeticum,
utpote et nostra sententia aptissimum, et illis, qui ex opusculo
hocce aliquam utilitaten quaerere velint, commodissimum, atque
latino-quidem fennicum ea ex caussa praetulimus, quod exstat nobis jam
lexicon fennico-latinum supra citatum Celeberrimi Renvall, quo perbene
uti possunt in medicis illi quibus hic ordo magis convenerit.

Sed antequam ipsum opus aggrediamur, non incommodum videtur, pauca
quaedam et generalia tantummodo pro instituti ratione de medicina
Fennonum praemittere, ne nimis offendatur lector, si in sequentibus
invenerit nonnulla quae primo adspectu a veritate abhorere forsan
videantur. -- Antiquitus jam, ars medica Fennonibus propria quidem
fuit, sive ipsi secum e peregrinis terris huc commigrantes attulerint,
sive a Lapponibus tunc temporis Fenniam habitantibus acceperint, --
quod quidem verisimile, cum et hodie maxima sit similitudo inter
Lapponum et Fennonum artificia medica, et in septemtrionalibus Fenniae
regionibus adhucdum pluris quam alibi habeatur magica ilia medicinae
exercitatio; -- attamen, et deficiente caeterarum scientiarum omni
lumine, et cum, variis impediti superstitionibus, magicisque imprimis
et incantatoriis usi medendi, rationibus, accuratioris observationis
auxilium omnino fere rejicerent Fennonum magi (_loihtiat, tietäjät_)
fieri non potuit, quin multae notiones medicae admodum vagae et sibi
inconstantes orirentur. Natura morborum cum ignota plerumque maneret,
denominationes ipsorum aptas, ne dicam definitiones, fingere non
potuerunt. Hancce penitioris cognitionis penuriam testantur permulta
nomina morborum fennica, ut e.g. _Sydäntauti_, quod, quamvis quasi
excuset synonyma denominatio latina _Cardialgia_, in fennica tamen
multo magis vagum habet sensum, cum omnes fere morbos significet,
quorum symptomata aut regionem epigastricam aut thoracis inferiora
quocumque modo feriant. Ejusdem generis est _Riisi_ quod complures
et diversos significat infantum morbus chronicos; -- et multa alia.
Caussas vero morborum exquirere neglexerunt, cum superstitiose easdem
a daemone quodam malo aut ab hominibus daemonica quadam vi
praeditis organismo illatas esse opinarentur. Quod vero ad curam
morborum attinet, partira exstatica quadam inspiratione ducti remedia
invenerunt interdum non omnino abhorrentia, partim vero, hanc
immediatae, ut ita dicam, indaginis viam deserentes, in varia pericula
aberrarunt. Negari equidem non potest, in quibusdam morbis medicamenta
sua seu arcana feliciter adhibuisse et ad huc, adhibere Fennonura magos;
et si ad id attenderis, quod ubique in iisdem fere familiis conservata
fuerir haecce mystica medicinam exercendi ars, neque omnino vagam nec
arbitrariam eandem esse judicabis. Contra vero, si adminicula adessent
stadium sciendae medicae promoventia, summo jure sperare liceret, pro
ingenii fennici sagacitate, haud raro mirefice emicante, medicinam
quoque rusticorum hucusque omni carentem verae scentiae praesidio,
sensim sensimque in melius conversam, majori tandem nostratibus
futuram utilitati.

Pharmacologicae Fennonum denominationes plurimum ad vegitabilia
pertinent, utpote quae sola ad Fennonum rusticorum cognitionem
pervenire potuerant et testantur plures ex ipto usu originem suam,
ut _riisi-ruoho, koi-ruoho, rutto-juuri_ &c. Ceteri vero omnes
termini, qui Anatomiam, Physiologiam, Diaeteticen et Medicinam
Forensem spectant, adeo pauci adhuc Fennonibus sunt, ut illorum vix
alia facienda videatur mentio quam enumeratio alphabetica, cum et
ceteroquin nihil fere habeant singulari animadversione dignum.

Haecce obiter tantummodo perstrinximus, quo et rationem operis,
specimen academicum sistentis, systematico ordine carentem quodammodo
excusaremus et imprimis consilii nostri probitatem vel paucis hisce
ostenderemus. Tuo vero, Lector benevole! mansueto judicio opusculam
nostrum impense commendamus, non ex adytis quidem scientiae medicae
depromtum, attamen, quod pio animo speramus et optamus, non sine omni
futurum utilitate.
